The Penang Food Hunter 2

The Penang food hunter continue to prowl!

1. Char Kuey Tiaw (Fried Rice Noodles).

Classic must try in Penang. Bouncy rice noodles, eggs, bean sprout, and prawns, stirred fried within a burning hot wok. Oily, fiery, and packed full of punchy deliciousness!

I let my appetite be the punching bag of a plate of champion de la champ Char Kuey Tiaw prepared by an old uncle on the corner of Siam road, Georgetown.

Eggs skillfully toss into the hot oily wok, followed by rice noodles portion picked into the wok. With his almost wife-like stature spatula- given that it was worn out till the point that his hand touches the wok when he fry- he added chillies, prawns, bean sprout and other ingredients into the wok.

The left hand holding his fan, the other holding the spatula, with his hero-like swag, he stir and stir... and still stir till all the fragrance within the wok spurred out at once when it was serve on the plate. And those fragrance never failed to make my stomach growl every time...  in the 45 mins I waited for my plate.

All wait was worth it once that boxing champ was on a plate served in front of you. A plate of Char Kuey Tiaw with sumptuous amount of prawns, Lap Cheong and bean sprout. Every mouth was full packed of flavour and taste of its ingredients! All thanks to that magnificent charcoal frying and the hard work of an old uncle, under a small stall, on the corner of Siam Road.

My plate of boxing champion @ Siam Road, Georgetown.
Open after 5.30pm till stock last. Day: Unpredictable and dependent on the weather.
Do go to sit at the coffee shop across the road for dine-in customer.

2. Prawn paste fried roll

One of my favourite dim sum dish in Penang! Perfect mixture of minced pork and prawn meat wrap in a thin crispy crust. One bite into it equals to 2 seconds of floating-up-in-the-sky time! hahahahah. That was how
delicious this small plate of wonder is! Best dip into mayonnaise and do not eat when it is freaking hot cause it burns you tongue! Trust me, been there, tried that.

My plate of wonder @ Chao Chuan dim sum, Off Jalan Raja Uda.
Self-service restaurant.
Open from 6.30am till afternoon.
For best variety, come on Sunday but be ready to fight for you table.

3. Tom Yam Noodles.

Gotta admit. I am an addict to this! You will first be given a small empty plate. In front of you a large variety of addition you can add to your tom yam. Ranged from fried fish (must have), abalone slice, various fishball, meatball, taiwanese sausages, various fried tofu, Shitake mushroom, crab stick and many more choices. The best part was, they all tasted delicious coupled with the tom yam broth.

After you made your pick (be aware that the more you picked, the more you pay for your bowl of noodles), you can choose between vermicelli, instant noodles or even porridge as your carb. After that, like every other good food places in Penang, you wait. A whole 45 mins and a glass of juice after for my bowl of addiction!

It was exactly like a drug. The tom yam broth tinged every of my sweet and sour taste bud, plus the spicy kick after. The best part was when you bite into every of your add ons, those sinful tom yam broth leaks out within you mouth! Heavenly! In my opinion, the fried fish and the abalone slice were the spot-on combo to this magnificent tom yam broth. Must put if you were to take on this!

Plus those mint leaves as garnish, put the flavour of this jolly good dish to a whole new level. Sad to say the mint leaves garnish don't come often. I only manage to get it once for so many time I been there.

Might be your new drug @ Second shop beside (right hand of the entrance) Kwang Hwa Primary School, Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth.
Open 6.30pm till 4am.
Day of operation: According to the mood of the owner :p

Another option along the road @ Joo Heng Restaurant, Apollo, Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth.
Which serve equal kick of tom yam with a slight differences in their tom yam broth.
Open 6.30pm till 4am.
Day of operation: It seems open every time I visited it. :p

4. Jalan Kulim, Bukit Mertajam town food court galore.

The place to be to have fantastic foods, all under one roof! I'll start off with my ever favourite- Laksa!

A branch off of its original stall at Jalan Kelang Lama, Kulim, serve a Javanese style Laksa (as I was told), which differ significantly from the Laksa of Pasar Air Itam. Perhaps the most significant was the addition of a type of salty cracker that go with the laksa. Trust me, even without dipping them cracker into the broth, they are surprisingly addictive. Given that I ate five pieces even before my bowl of laksa was serve.

Fish and fish everywhere! The owner must me a generous chap given that the whole bowl of laksa was packed full of ikan kembong. Plus that all you can pour prawn paste, it was rather cheap with a price tag of RM 3.50 for a big sized bowl. However, the broth lack a certain kick expected of typical asam laksa with no galangal flower in sight. It redeem itself thou with its thick and bouncy noodles which can fill your stomach even with its small portion that of typical of laksa.

All was good right until the moment when the waiter shed light to me that every cracker I ate cost RM0.20 a pop. Daayum! I shouldn't had that much (I ate 8 pieces by the way)!

Next on, Fried Jawa Mee. For I treated it as a spin off from Mamak Mee, minus all the spiciness. The noodles was nicely deep fried . And that gave the dish a distinctive taste. Coupled with eggs, bean sprout, fried tofu, and lettuce- it make a good snack under RM 4.

Next up was Octopus! lotsa lotsa octopus! Cooked just right inside boiling water to create that bouncy texture that would make them jump out of your mouth if you did not bite properly. Them cooked octopus was bath with sparing amount of oil, garlic and I suppose the owner's special soy sauce. Be the reason why they taste so good! Eat just like that or dip them into chili sauce. Either way it will sure produce that satisfying owe on everyone's face for those that tasted it. I am sure I did.

Octopus! Mighty chunky fine of you~~

Finally! Desserts! With RM 2, you get get yourself a mountain of ice so nice, it'll eats all your sorrow away. What so unique bout this ABC (Ais Batu Campur) was it's peanuts! Chunky, crunchy, and tasty. The right amount of brown plus red sugar, and condensed milk, coupled with cendol strips, kidney beans, corn and jellys, makes one hell of a dessert. Must try!

Go galore @ Taman Jaya, Bukit Mertajam (easily noticeable from Jalan Kulim driving from Butterworth to Kulim).

The journey of self pampered continues...
